Does anyone use audio tours inside a historic home? If so, what have been your experiences either positive or negative?

Hi Keith, I'm interested in hearing about this too. We are considering doing something simple like QR codes that link to a spot on our website with audio clips, and visitors listen with their phones and their own earbuds. Would love to hear if others are doing this or any other kind of audio tour?

    Susan, Keith,

We are also using QR codes that link to an audio file with an image and text transcript on our website.  We went a little bit further and also added multiple language options, however, that makes it much more difficult to update or add stops since we have to get four different people back in to record the new audio.

We provide audio tours to a number of historic locations like Biltmore House, The Henry Morrison Flagler Museum and Mission San Juan Capistrano.  They all use more than one delivery platform and all are providing multiple tours. I would be happy to discuss this with you at your convenience and provide you with contact people at all these institutions.

We as well have an audio tour you reach via QR code on our site map, which takes you to a hidden page on our website. Visitors can then activate rooms in whichever order they prefer. It was incredibly easy to set up, and can be changed easily as well by recording new audio on an iPhone and then uploading it. We have a Spanish language version as well, and I agree that creates a complication just because it's a second rerecord for any change. However, it has been totally worth it, particularly since the platform is free.

I recently visited The Mount, Edith Wharton's home in Lenox Massachusetts. They provide  a self guided audio tour through their website for the visitor to use with their own phone. Attaching a link for you to see what they have done.

    Good afternoon,

At NUBART we offer an innovative audio tour solution for cultural organizations: The Audio Guide Visitors Keep!

Our system consists of attractive customizable cards (size of a credit card).  Visitors gain access to multimedia and multilingual content, by scanning a private QR code directly with their smartphones.

However, since the cards are non-transferable but reusable by its legitimate owner, they have commercial value and can be sold, representing a new revenue stream for the organization!

We have worked with some historic homes in Europe.  Currently we are producing an audio guide for Historic Rock Ford in Lancaster , PA and past year produced an audio guide for the Harriett Beecher Stowe Center in Hartford, CT.

I will gladly share further information.

Hi Keith,  I don't think we have had the pleasure of meeting yet but I'm sure you are aware that we, at Guide-ID  Welcome To Guide-ID, The World's Smartest Audio Guide Device  provide the audio guides at Andrew Jackson's Hermitage.  Additionally, we provide the audio guides at George Washington's Mount Vernon and Thomas Jefferson's Monticello as well as other historic homes like Stratford Hall & Maymont Mansion.  Some of those sites have the audio guides designated for both the grounds and the historic homes.  That would include Monticello, Stratford Hall and Maymont Mansion.  I'd be happy to put you in touch with the appropriate contacts there to get their feedback.  Furthermore, if anyone else on this forum would like more information on Guide-ID's audio guides, I'd be happy to be in touch.  With best regards, Jeff

    Hi Keith,

Similar to others we have QR codes that we use. Up until a few weeks ago, we had the tour/audio tour hosted on a Wix site with links to the audio in each room section on the website. However, we just transitioned everything over to Bloomberg Connects. They've been great to work with and everything is free! They're going to be unveiling a "tour" platform soon so we'll move over to that when the time comes.

Keith, not a historic home, but a small aviation museum.  A few months ago, we partnered with Museums 22 (https://www.museums22.com/) and created a tour where visitors can use their smartphone to download our branded  Audio Tour app at no cost.  It has been welcomed with a good response from our visitors and allowed us to expand the information beyond our signage with extra photos, etc.  The company was very easy to work with.

    Hi Keith.

My name is Kealy Gordon and I'm the Account Manager for Guru Experience Co. We work with a wide range of clients from art museums, historic battleships and national/cultural sites. Our clients have found great success using QR codes so the visitors can download the audio and/or app for free. I would love to speak with you about what your project is and if it's something that you might be able to assist with!
