  • 1.  Anyplace to post if exhibit cases available

    Posted 04-18-2023 12:35 PM

    Good morning,
I vaguely remember seeing - somewhere - a website or place where a museum could post if they had exhibit cases they were getting rid of and would be willing to give away. Would appreciate if anyone can provide me with that info/resource - working with a small museum possibly in need of cases but no budget for them.

    Thank you -
    Claudia

    Good morning Claudia,

The largest museum reuse market place that I know of is Culture Nut (https://culturenut.com/). There are also sometimes smaller regional groups, though these are usually targeting teachers and art supplies, not as much exhibition materials.

    Hi Claudia,

There is also this site:  https://www.barder.art/  for display furniture, crates etc.  There is a filter for location which is helpful since it often does not make sense to ship some of these items long distance.  I am going to start using this for some crates that we don't want to keep but are nearly new.

    Hi Claudia,

Local exchanges probably make the most sense, since exhibit cases are generally expensive to ship (better just to pick up).   State-wide and local Facebook pages and listservs work well.   I've seen many museums offer and get exhibit materials via the Museum Association of Arizona listserv.

    Stay safe,

    Hi Claudia,
Try posting about their availability on the listserve/facebook pages for the Historic House + Smaill Museums Affinity Group (SEMC), the Small Museum Association, or a state museum association.

Hi Claudia, I feel for you. You don't want to throw them away, but they're in the way. Surely someone wants them! I like Culturenut mentioned above, but they deal mostly in bigger more elaborate stuff, but ya never know. Barder.art is new to me but it sounds like it's worth a look.

I've had success giving things to the local non-profit arts organization, the art department at the local colleges (JCs included), High School Art departments, and community centers. I've compiled a few other resources over the years. Many of these I haven't actually looked at or utilized, heck, some might not evern be around anymore, but hey I have the list why not share it with everyone:

    1. Museum Next: Museum Next is a website and conference series for museum professionals. They offer a variety of resources and services to members, including access to a marketplace where museums can buy and sell exhibition items.

    2. Museum Marketplace: Museum Marketplace is an online platform where museums and other cultural institutions can buy and sell items, including exhibition furniture and decorations.

    3. Artsy: Artsy is a platform that connects collectors and museums with artists and galleries. It offers a variety of art-related services, including buying and selling art and exhibition equipment.

    4. ExhibitionHub: ExhibitionHub is an online marketplace for exhibition furniture and equipment. It is a platform for museums, galleries, event planners, and other businesses to buy and sell pre-owned and new exhibition items.

    5. Freecycle: Freecycle is a network of local groups where people can give away or receive items for free. It is a great place for museums to post about items they are giving away, including exhibit cases.

    6. Association for State and Local History (ASLH): ASLH is a professional association for individuals and organizations working to preserve and promote history. Their website has a job board and a classifieds section where museums can post about items they are giving away or selling.

    7. American Alliance of Museums (AAM): AAM is a professional association for museums and museum professionals. Their website has a job board and a classifieds section where museums can post about items they are giving away or selling. Including this forum, I would imagine.

    8. Museum-L: Museum-L is an email listserv dedicated to discussion and information sharing among museum professionals. It is a great place to post about items a museum is giving away or selling.

    9. Craigslist: And good 'ol Craigslist, it's a popular classifieds website where museums can post about items they are giving away or selling.
