Looking for other city owned museums

The Nashville Parthenon wants to connect with other small museums that are also owned and operated by city government. City owned museums face unique challenges and we'd love to discuss successes and new approaches. Let's get together over Zoom! Comment below and we'll be in touch.

The Palo Alto Art Center is also City-run, with a nonprofit friends group that supports us in fundraising and advocacy. I believe there were past discussions of an AAM special interest group focused on municipal or state run museums. Would love to see that happen! Very happy to participate in a conversation!

The Venice Museum, Dale Laning & Julia Cousins Laning Archives & Research Center, the Lord-Higel House, and the soon-to-be-built open storage building for our 1926 fire truck are all owned and managed by the City of Venice, Division of Historical Resources.  I'd be interested in chatting.

The Lillian E. Jones Museum is a city-owned museum in Jackson, Ohio and struggles with our identity and financial means as well. I'd like to try again. I connected once and then things here got icy (literally) and other small museum issues got in the way. Hopefully I'm back!

    • Hi Jennifer,
I am not sure the strict definition, if there is one, of a 'small museum'. There are not only 'City' but also 'County' and "State' owned, operated and/or managed jointly with a museum / institutional non-profit. Lots and lots of these, not only museums but other cultural institutions.  I know there are challenges, at times, with this public and/or public/private business model. Following is a short-list and if I can help make introduction, let me know by sending note through my website, artmanaskconsulting.com. No cost/charge to help of course! Hope this is helpful.

      Good luck
      Art

Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County
      Seattle Aquarium (City)
Los Angeles Museum of Art (County)
California Science Center (State of CA)
      Saint Louis Art Museum (City)
Mill City Museum in Minneapolis (State of MN)
Minnesota History Center (State of MN)
      Los Angeles Arboretum (County)
      Brooklyn Botanic Garden (City)
Los Angeles Zoo & Gardens (City)
Museums located on College / University Campuses throughout the US. Most all if not all are definitely 'small'. Most have State involvement.
      And many others of course.

The Greensboro History Museum in North Carolina is a public/private partnership. We are in the city's Library Department and are city employees. The city owns the building and pays operating costs and capital improvements. Our non-profit, GHM Inc., funds public programs and exhibitions and owns the collections. Lots of interesting aspects of this partnership that has worked really well for decades.

    Hi Jennifer:

The Heckscher Museum of Art is a small museum owned by the Town of Huntington, a suburban municipality of roughly 200,000 people on Long Island, NY.  However, it is a hybrid institution with management having been delegated by the municipality to an independent non-profit corporation established for that purpose.  The Museum receives an annual budget allocation from the municipality to help support operations, but over the years the non-profit has raised an ever increasing percentage of the Museum's operating budget.  Municipal support currently accounts for less than one-third of the annual operating budget.

I will only be Interim Director until June, when Heather Arnet will be joining the Museum as our new CEO, but will happily pass along information to her.

I am sorry for the delay in connecting; as many of you have no doubt experienced, staffing shortages caused unexpended delays. I have created a survey to find out a bit about each institution and how best to connect. Please take a few minutes to complete this short survey so that we can get started. Feel free to pass this along to other city owned museums. I am looking forward to connecting and learning from all of you!
