  • 1.  Museum Closure Employee Compensation

    Posted 03-18-2020 07:57 PM
    Hello,

I am looking specifically into employee compensation plans during Museum Closure, beyond PTO that is accrued.

Can anyone share their plan for how to compensate staff when the Museum closes and they run out of PTO?
    - Hourly vs. Salary employees.
    - Senior Staff, Visitor Services, Admin staff.

    Thank you,
    Jeseca

    Hi Jessica,

Just FYI, the LA Times newspaper has summary of most all LA area institutions and what they are doing within the past week. You might check local area news organizations too and can go online to see the LA Times article, sorry I did not save it. Hopefully / maybe AAM is collecting the information too.

Best wishes and stay safe and healthy,
    Art

The Museum of Russian Icons in Clinton, MA has pledged to pay employees for their regular hours during the closure. The full-time staff is working remotely or going into the Museum on an as-needed basis-only one or two at a time (to work on projects that are easier when there are no visitors, like painting walls, etc.) but are being encouraged to work from home. The part-time staff is being paid for their normal hours. Before we closed, visitor services and part-time staff were told they could elect not to come in if they felt uncomfortable and could use PTO. If they ran out of that, they could take time off without pay and would not be replaced. As soon as our local schools closed, the Museum also closed, so it was not necessary.

    Hi Jeseca,

Here's an article criticizing the approaches of some museums from Hyperallergic.
