  • 1.  Exhibits/Collections Labels

    Posted 03-25-2019 04:33 PM

    Greetings!

We are seeking some advice on how other museums identify and tag their objects and artifacts espically items on display.

Motorcyclepedia is a museum dedicated to Motorcycles and to the history of the people and various cultures through the years.

We have framed and unframed artwork, small knick-knack objects, books, magazines, tools and motorcycles.

We have been using a loop of Dymo labels.  It works on some items, but we are hoping for a better method.

Where do you place the labels – visible or hidden?

Have you experienced any problem with glue residue if placed on the artifact/item?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I agree that this is a challenge and would also be interested in others' techniques.  There are numerous publications on managing identification.  We use a combination of stringed tags, reversible coatings and markers, pencil, self-adhering labels and stitched-on tags.  Since our institution has been collecting for 130 years, some of the early methods are boggling now, but the object ID numbers have not degenerated, so....
