  • 1.  Collection Storage Boxes

    Hi Everyone,

We are looking to standardize our box numbering system in collection storage. There has not been a standard way of numbering/labeling collection storage boxes. Do any of you recommend a specific way of numbering these types of boxes?

Thank you so much for your advice!

    Hi Kathryne,

With only a few exceptions, at the National Museum of the Marine Corps, we don't go down to the box level in the collections storage, our database system goes only to the shelf and boxes are labeled on their exterior for identification. The few exceptions are binders of matchbooks, bumper stickers, and some smaller pieces of ordnance, and this was decided based on their unique storage needs.  In these cases, the box/binder number is noted in a "Notes" section of our database, underneath the location code. We've debated about adding an additional number in our numerical location code, but there are so few objects that require it, it didn't seem worth it to go through the rigor of amending the database.
