Our museum is going to purchase a portable wall system.

    Does your museum use one?

What are some important issues we need to consider?

How portable is it?  We want to move the walls to the sides of the room, temporarily, during events, so this is important to us. (Some offer wheels on the bottom, which can be covered.)

Thanks for any insights you can offer.

We use movable walls (System 200) ordered from Panelock Display Systems Limited.  sales@panelockdisplay.com
They can be ordered in several sizes and can also be ordered customized.  The units can be assembled without any tools and and total broken down into components for storing or moving through areas where the doorways may not be large enough to roll through. The walls have retractable wheels that lower the wall down for total stability.  We have found these walls to be very versatile in use and can be patched, repaired and painted just like normal walls.  They have been in use constantly since June 2015.  Worth looking into as this company offers many other wall systems as well.

We have specified the Mili-Wall system 100 on several occasions. There is a learning curve to overcome but it is worth it. The walls are durable and can take fasteners, be patched and painted. The taller panels are quite elegant and were used at the NewsMuseum for the migrants photo exhibit.

We use Milla Walls too.  You'll need 3 people to set them up safely, but it can be done in a number of configurations.  I agree that there's a bit of a learning curve but we've successfully used them in 4 different galleries over the last year.  They can be resurfaced with laminate to cover up nail holes.  Depending on what you're hanging, Command Strips can be used to adhere, but for even the smallest strips, the laminate is likely to bubble just a bit once removed.  We use a straight pin to pierce the bubbles and just smooth them out with our hands-- it's a much easier solution to resurfacing and the pin prick isn't visible.

    Thank you, Aaron

We appreciate this information about the laminate, the set-up, and what you have learned.

    Jean,

My clients love Mila-walls. They are portable, can go into storage easily, and configured to an appropriate layout. One of the things to be careful with (even with a portable wall system), is that your local jurisdiction may require permitting because they are over a certain height or could potentially block off your path of egress through the building if you locate the walls incorrectly. Always look into whether you need an architect to help re-purpose a space for you.
