    Greetings!

I would be interested to know the good and not so good experiences those in programming have had with live stage performances or live historic presentations in museum gallery spaces (not auditoriums). Problems or pointers are also welcome. (And, if you wish, tell me about your presentation!)

    Thank you!

We at the Gund Gallery at Kenyon College have presented several dance, improv, and small scale musical performances within the exhibitions offered at the gallery, with significant success. These events are generally well attended (50-100 attendees at a time) and often attract fresh visitors to the space. It has proven to be a win-win-win situation benefitting the performers, the gallery, and the visitors.

Our Education department has produced several performances in our galleries. I'd say the most important thing is to be aware of any risks to exhibits--keep performers a safe distance from them, think about movement/risks of falling (raised platforms are probably a bad idea). Also prepare for audience size--you don't want the space so crowded that the audience is potentially brushing up exhibits, or otherwise getting too close to them, and think about fire codes, exits, and such. The latter are addressed as a matter of course for an auditorium, but a gallery space could be different.

We have worked with the UTEP Department of Theatre and Dance on performances in our gallery spaces. We have had students reading of the play, Just Like Us and have had dance students and their professor perform a piece in response to our exhibit about the Braceros. My favorite was a dance performance Iconic Pop by UTEP Professor Cristina Goletti and featuring Mexican artists, Sebastian Santamaria and Cinthia Pérez Navarro, in conjunction with our exhibit about Tequila. Here is a glimpse of that performance: Centennial Museum and Chihuahuan Desert Gardens

Inspiring, fun, exciting piece by UTEP Department of Theatre and Dance! Thank you to Ms. Cristina Goletti for bringing this experience to the Centennial Museum. Don't forget to visit their website...

All three of these performances were successful at solidifying the museum's relationship with the Theatre and Dance department, bringing new audiences into the museum, and expanding our interdisciplinary programming.

    Hi -

We are a museum of world cultures, and we often have solo or small-group performances in our galleries.  Sometimes these are individual programs, but we also have an annual spring event where there are performances in the galleries and in our auditorium, as well as crafts for visitors of all ages, all going on at the same time.  This annual event is one of our most popular, as people may come because they have a special desire to see one group, but then they stay and enjoy the whole afternoon, learning about cultures that may be unfamiliar to them.  We try to be as diverse in the performances as possible, both in culture represented and in type of performance (storytelling, dance, music, etc.)

    Things to consider:
Is/are the performers sitting on the ground (which often happens with Asian drum performances)?  If so, rent a stage that lifts them up for all in the audience to see.

Are you able to set up the room and remain ADA compliant, as well as follow all fire codes?

Do you have portable sound systems and extra mikes and stands that aren't needed for the auditorium?  Many performers are willing to bring their own equipment, for a small extra fee.

Will any of the artifacts in the gallery you want to use hurt by the vibrations caused by the performance (sound, dance)?

    Hope this is helpful.

Our big challenge was sound. Our IT department bought a microphone with a stand and speaker that we can set up anywhere. It needs a plug, so not out in the middle of a floor, but it has proved good for gatherings of about 40+ people. It's a Fender Passport Portable PA system, and it works quite well for us.
