    Hello,

I was curious how other museum's handle end of day guests (30 minutes or less prior to closing). Do you turn away visitors 30 minutes or less prior to closing, offer free passes for a future visit, or offer free admission for that day as it is an abbreviated visit? Are any specific details listed on your website regarding end of day procedures to try to mitigate issues? For example: "Doors close @ 4:30pm. Galleries  begin to close @ 4:45pm"

Our museum does have paid admission and we start clearing the galleries at 15 minutes prior to closing. We issue a 10 minute and 5 minute warning to all guests.

    Any further information is appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Bethanie

    Hi Bethanie,

We have on our website posted that last admission is at 4:30. Our museum isn't very large, it doesn't take long to clear the galleries, so if people really want to come in after 430 we don't charge and let them know it's going to be a quick visit. We do lock the doors at 4:45 if the galleries are clear.

    Hope this is helpful,

    Hi Bethanie,

On our website and front doors we have posted that last admission ends and main doors are locked one hour prior to closing (closing time varies depending on what time of year it is). We have a main museum and a pioneer village so it takes visitors a couple hours to see everything. If visitors really want to come in right when admission ends, we let them in for free and let them know that they will not be able to take their time to see everything. We encourage people to come back the next day or whenever they have time to see the entire museum and village. I hope this helps!

    Hi Bethanie,

I work for a pretty small historic house museum. We close the museum at 3pm and make it clear on our website and signage that last entry is at 2:45pm to try to mitigate any disappointment from visitors who don't have enough time to see everything. We also start warning people buying tickets in our visitor center around 2:30pm that the museum closes in only half an hour. We try to repeat this information in as many places as possible (on our website, on the ticketing page, in the ticket confirmation email, in the signs on our property, on our social media, etc.) along with a sentence like "we suggest spending at least half an hour in the museum," but there will always be people who need to be reminded. At the end of the day, it's up to the visitor to decide for themselves whether the $10 admission is worth a 15-20 minute visit!

    I hope that helps,
    Sheridan

At the NGA in DC we are free to all as well.   We keep allowing guests in until the very last minute.  Also now we do have a 15-minute warning, then at the end an announcement that we are closed.  Of course any that would still be there we would have to tell the 'show is over', 'good-bye' or something as such.  Doing our clearing we would be finding any stragglers.  Now if there is a sign posted outside at the doors this should be letting people know how time there is left for viewing.  I have been known to tell them certain things like, "You can come back tomorrow" or "Take a floor plan (brochure) with you to plan for your next visit".
