  • 1.  Condition Reporting - How Many Varieties Does Your Institution Use?

    Posted 05-01-2020 01:46 PM
How many different Condition Reports do you use for your museum/institution/collection? Do you have a different version depending on the type of object  - artwork, textiles, vehicles, jewelry, etc, or do you have one condition report form that nominally covers "everything"?

Do you think there should be different types of condition reports depending on the object?

I'd love to hear your thoughts!

An excellent guide to this subject is Basic Condition Reporting: A Handbook by the Southeast Registrars Association.   The fourth edition is available on Amazon.   It's a bit pricey, but if you take a look at the Table of Contents it will give you a list of the different types of materials they cover.   The book includes both general and specific types of condition reports.

We use Articheck, a subscription-based online condition reporting tool.  While it is geared towards art museums and galleries, it also has furniture and other medium indicators.  We have used it for maps as well.  As we consult for museums and private collectors we see that most institutions have one form that we can vary as needed.  Collector Systems CMS has an electronic condition reporting module, but we will just start working with that next week
