  • 1.  Erasure of LGBTQ History in Museums

    Posted 06-09-2020 03:15 PM
I have an intern that is working on a research project analyzing the process of erasure of LGBTQ history in museums.  Does anyone have good resources that I can pass along to them?

    Thanks,

Contact the Alice Austen House in New York: https://aliceausten.org/

I attended a conference session featuring the house's director, Victoria Munro. She talked about how the house transformed from just a historic house museum that ignored Alice's personal life to one that celebrated it and now hosts a diverse range of programming and exhibitions celebrating the LGBTQ community.

New York Public Library has both institutional and personal archival material in its collections. You can go to www.nypl.org, then click on Research and Research Guides to learn more.

    Hi Sara!

The Lesbian Herstory Archives in Brooklyn may also be of help! I once worked with someone who was an intern there and absolutely loved their experience - and the sheer volume of material in the archives is incredible.

    Hi Sara,

The team at the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art might be a resource. Like other LGBTQ art orgs, it was specifically founded because of the lack of support for queer artists at other Museums and institutions. You can email me at eduardo@leslielohman.org and we can look into more resources for your intern's research.

    Best,
    Eduardo

If you are looking for books, I highly recommend Interpreting LGBT History at Museums and Historic Sites by Susan Ferentinos. It highlights some of the failures and success of interpreting LGBT+ history.

Evolution's Rainbow by Joan Roughgarden and Biological Exuberance by Bruce Bagemihl could potentially be good resources as well. The first parts of both books provide commentary on the exclusion of non-heteronormative animal behavior in science and the subsequent impact on the presentation of natural history in museums, zoos, etc.
