Hello everyone-
I'm trying to see if there would be any interest in a panel presentation at AAM 2019 around the idea of museums highlighting objects or collections that are both "special" and "ordinary". The idea would be along these lines, but if people are interested we could alter a bit too:
How is your museum working to highlight "special" objects or collections? Especially "special" ordinary objects that have an extraordinary story to tell? All museums and archives have collections or objects that have amazing research or educational value to the public- but by themselves may not be an entire, eye-catching exhibit. How does your small museum celebrate or highlight these objects in unique and impactful ways?
At the Imperial Valley Desert Museum, we have an amazing photography collection of over 6,000 images that record the changes to regional geoglyphs over a span of 35 years. We are in the process of highlight this collection without making it 'just' a photography exhibit by: working with the photographer and a regional publisher on a coffee table book of the images; testing an exhibit using an iPad and an interactive Prezi display; gathering data and feedback from this temporary exhibit to fuel a grant that will include a touchscreen tabletop that will become an interactive exhibit done by professional web designers.
Please contact me if you're interested,
Thanks
