  • 1.  Charging for online programming

    Posted 04-28-2020 12:54 PM
    Hi everyone -

I know many organizations have shifted to online programming in the last 6 weeks. I'm curious to know if anyone is charging for online programs and, if so:

    1) how much?
    2) how did you arrive at that amount?
    3) how has your audience responded?

Thanks in advance for any wisdom you can pass along!

    Hi Patrica,

At the Swaner Preserve and EcoCenter, we have continued to charge a fee to access our normally paid lectures and workshops that we were able to move online. At this time we charge $7/person (this is our normal rate for lectures, we have found that is the best price to bring in a large enough audience), but have continued to keep these events free to our members. Audience response has been good so far, most of our event registrations have been filling close to or at capacity.

I'm curious what method people are using to collect the program fees? I'd especially love to hear from University Museums since there are additional restrictions in the university system.

    Hi Lisa -

The university definitely provides more challenges for online payments. We were lucky enough to already have gone through the approvals for Blackbaud Merchant Services at MSU. We use Altru for payment and data tracking at our museum. Prior to that the university had an approved system call CashNet that we could use for collecting online payment - it is clunky and does not integrate with our data or services platforms but worked. I assume your university has something along those lines as well?
We will be experimenting with charging for some online programming in lieu of summer camp in the coming months.

We handle registration and payment for our virtual events through Eventbrite. We are an extension site of Utah State University, they have approved the use of Eventbrite for ticketing. Once the event has ended, eventbrite issues us a check. They do have a fee associated that we pass on the the ticket buyer.

I then send everyone who registered instructions for how to access the webinar (we use Webex, as that is the program used by the University). We record all of our webinars and share the recording with those who have registered after the live event.

There have definitely been some glitches, but overall has been working well for us so far and has helped us to continue some sort of revenue stream.
