    Hello all,

My museum has numerous 16mm films in our archive produced by a former curator. The films are from the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. We also have 16 reels of magnetic audio tape from him as well. We are interested in having them digitized and I am requesting any recommendations for companies that others have used for similar projects.

    Thank you,

    Tim

    Tim,
We have digitized film, video and audio files at The Media Preserve in Cranberry Township, PA, which happens to be in our backyard.  However, they work with institutions nationwide.  They have a good website with lots of information.  Whoever you use, just be sure to quality check the new format.  Hope this helps.

    Greetings
Regarding film, video, audio preservation,  transfer quality varies tremendously.  Assessing the significance of the films and tapes will help you decide which provider to choose for transfers, and preservation of originals.   Depending on the material, you may be able to obtain funding for transfers and preservation.

    Northeast Historic Film,
a film archive in Maine and speak with the interim Executive Director, David Weiss.
    207.469.0924 (old film.org)
" Attempting to run old film or videotapes through a projector or VCR may result in irreparable damage to the images. To protect the originals, make showing them convenient, allow for easily making multiple copies, and to facilitate editing on your computer, we recommend that you transfer your films and videotapes to DVD, Blu-ray or digital files. Northeast Historic Film is a moving image archives; we have years of training and experience in the proper ways to handle and care for moving image materials. We also offer film assessment and repair."

With the assistance of AVPreserve, NEDCC has completed a year-long business planning study to  expand its digital audio preservation service for libraries, archives, and museums to include traditional methods for digitally reformatting non-grooved legacy audio carriers.  This new service will build upon NEDCC’s successful implementation of “IRENE,” the IMLS-funded optical scanning technology developed by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the Library of Congress for digitizing discs, cylinders, and other grooved audio carriers.

exhibition, and use of moving image materials. ....

AMIA is a non-profit professional association established to advance the field of moving image archiving by fostering cooperation among individuals and organizations concerned with the acquisition, description, preservation, exhibition and use of moving image materials.

AMIA's members range from those who work solely with moving images to organizations where moving images are only a small part of their collection to individuals who want to protect their personal collection - home movies or small gauge or video - to film buffs concerned with losing our visual heritage."

    Tim,

I've had good luck with Rising Fall based in Dallas. They do top notch work and might be too expensive but you should check with them and see if color grading and a real Telecine transfer is justified over a lower cost one-light projection.

I've got the same question and will look into the above recommendations, but if anyone has recommendations for film/audio tape digitization local to Los Angeles, please let me know.

    Thanks!

The state of the art equipment for film digitization is the Kinetta <http://kinetta.com/overview.html>. The machines are not inexpensive, but the firm also provides contract digitization services.
