Assessing the significance of the films and tapes will help you decide which provider to choose for transfers, and preservation of originals. Depending on the material, you may be able to obtain funding for transfers and preservation.

With the assistance of AVPreserve, NEDCC has completed a year-long business planning study to expand its digital audio preservation service for libraries, archives, and museums to include traditional methods for digitally reformatting non-grooved legacy audio carriers. This new service will build upon NEDCC’s successful implementation of “IRENE,” the IMLS-funded optical scanning technology developed by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the Library of Congress for digitizing discs, cylinders, and other grooved audio carriers.

We have digitized film, video and audio files at The Media Preserve in Cranberry Township, PA, which happens to be in our backyard. However, they work with institutions nationwide. They have a good website with lots of information. Whoever you use, just be sure to quality check the new format. Hope this helps.

Hello all,
My museum has numerous 16mm films in our archive produced by a former curator. The films are from the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. We also have 16 reels of magnetic audio tape from him as well. We are interested in having them digitized and I am requesting any recommendations for companies that others have used for similar projects.
