We are going to do a complete reinstallation of one of our museums this year. One of the things we are going to do is cut a whole in the top floor and put a staircase to the lower level for easier access for our Patrons. We have been moving all artwork and artifacts out of the Museum and surrounding Curatorial offices.

Our institution has a complex of 5 wings connected by a central hub. We are still concerned about vibration in the other 4 museums. Does anyone know of acceptable levels of vibrations that will not adversely affect the artifacts?

This was a timely question since the 2018 MAAM Building Museum conference starts today in Philadelphia. At last years MAAM Building Museum Conference there was a session on vibrations. I am not sure if the session was recorded but you could contact the speakers about their experiences.  Last year's program description is below. Reach out if you have questions.

    Good Vibrations: Planning
and Implementation of Vibration Control During Construction
    and Renovation
    Sunday, February 26, 2017

Vibration control methods have often been based on limited understanding and resources, sometimes resulting in over-conservatism, which increases construction costs, or under-conservatism, which risks damage to collections and to sensitive elements of museum structures. Attend this session to understand the nature and potential effects of construction vibrations. Panelists
will explain how to select vibration limits and construction speci cations that are sound and
reasonable. Using examples of projects at The Art Institute of Chicago, The Saint Louis Art Museum, and several other institutions, panelists will outline the basics of a proven, scientific methodology to successfully carry out vibration control during a project at your museum.

Moderator: Arne P. Johnson, PE, SE, Principal, Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc.

Speakers: Sara Urizar, Executive Director of Design and Construction, The Art Institute of Chicago; Nick Canellis, former Project Executive, Turner Construction Company

I just got back from this year's Building Museums conference.  Another resource for vibration information is http://www.geosonicsvibratech.com. They would be happy to answer your questions.

    Hi Gary,

I would recommend you read "Managing Construction-Induced Vibration in the Museum Environment" by Serotta and Smyth: http://resources.conservation-us.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/8/2015/03/osg021-12.pdf

The Getty has also produced research that is relevant in this publication: Advances in the Protection of Museum Collections from Earthquake Damage: Papers from a Symposium Held at the J. Paul Getty Museum at the Villa on May 3–4, 2006.

    Best of luck,
