  • 1.  Education Department Philosophy?

    Posted 08-31-2018 10:24 AM

Would any of you be willing to share your Education Department-specific philosophy or mission? Or, how you worked through writing that document? We're mid-way through writing a department philosophy and also thinking about an overarching interpretive philosophy, and could use some good models to share with our director and board.

Some of the main museum education philosophies are listed in the Museum Managers Compendium (Jacobsen, Roman & Littlefield, 2017). You can select which ones align with your museums goals.

Four of the books 101 sections are devoted to this question: Education: K-12 Strategy; Learning Theory; Social Learning Concepts, and Strategies. These sections contain diagrams, planing worksheets, citations and descriptions you can copy and adapt. Fall/Dierking, Hein, Vygotsky, Borun, Jolly and others work is summarized.

    Cheers,  John

My department includes education and visitor services, so the mission includes both.  We have guiding principles rather than philosophy.  These are endorsed by our organization's advisory board of managers.  I have taken the succinct approach in word count (it fits on a fact sheet), but one that is accountable and adaptable on an individual or program basis. Each can be explored for meaning in a specific context.  These have proved durable and useful, with some tweaking over ten or twenty years.  We also have wordier program philosophies for adult and youth education programs that are more existing-resource-influenced and strategic planning oriented than mission or vision.

    Department Mission:
Provide high-quality learning programs and visitor experience through exemplary resource stewardship.

    Guiding Principles:
"May we have been worthy stewards is our hope" John T. Morris, 1913.    (FYI - John is one of our founders)
Each action and interaction supports the Arboretum's mission.
Set the standard for education, experience and service.
