I am on the board of the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural history. We wish to compare our salaries to others/market data. We are talking to another, similar Central California Museum and pursuing resources through the Community Foundation. What other advice or resources can anyone recommend? I appreciate any help you can offer, Tama Olver

    Hi Tama:

I don't know if you've seen it, but AAM has a salary survey from 2017 that might be worth checking out.

    Hi Tama,
Here is a link to AAMD's (free!) Salary Survey, which features salary benchmarks for 50 professional positions in art museums.  https://aamd.org/sites/default/files/document/2017%20AAMD%20Salary%20Survey_0.pdf

The Association of Art Museum Directors published their 2017 Salary Survey online, which includes responses from 219 museums in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, and covers more than 50 different staff positions, from the director's office to leadership and support positions in curatorial, education, advancement, communications, and security departments. It is available on their website: https://aamd.org

Related to that is an article in Art World titled "Here's How Much Money Museum Employees Really Make" it's at: https://news.artnet.com/art-world/survey-museum-employees-salaries-1009073

    Hello Tama,

If you are looking for California information, California Association of Museums (CAM) has conducted salary surveys for a number of years. In 2017, CAM joined AAM's national salary survey. You can purchase a copy of of that survey or the 2015 CAM survey at Other Publications - 2017 Diversity Survey Report - 2015 Salary Survey. Depending on whether you are an AAM or CAM member, you may be eligible for a discount.

    Best Regards,

    -Kim

I suggest getting a copy of the Alliance of American Museums' salary survey-- it includes salary levels at museums of every discipline and in every region in the US.
