Museum Closing

Hello! I am the new Public & Community Relations Coordinator with the Flint Institute of Arts. We are in the midst of an expansion project and will be closing for 3 months during summer 2017. Does anyone have any ideas or examples they can share on how to still engage the community and maintain visibility while being closed? Thank you!

    Hi Marissa,

Our museum remained open through every renovation since I've been here. Yet I wonder if you have the ability (and if your conservators and education team are on board) to offer offsite interactive 1-2 times per month at sites such as libraries, schools, etc. Maybe pieces from your collection which relate to specific neighborhoods could be presented and residents/visitors to the site could learn about and respond to the pieces.

    Just an immediate thought.

    Best,

We've discussed this a bit. We are going to offer art classes of site in our downtown area.

You may want to consider creating a mobile museum.  This involves the purchase or rental of a truck or trailer containing selected exhibit content which can travel to various events and locations in your community.  With properly themed graphic wraps, the unit acts as a billboard everywhere it goes, and having a presence at popular events may engage potential new visitors who have not historically utilized the museum. Perhaps some kind of GPS-based mobile app could be used for the public to participate in a "find your museum" game during periods when no special events are announced.  If resources allow, a campaign of regular and frequent changes to the content (perhaps more affordable due to the limited space) could generate some enthusiasm.

    Cheers,

       Michael

For our major renovations in 1999-2001, the Library services were available but there was no gallery space.  I had to schedule exhibitions elsewhere to justify keeping te designers/installers on staff.  Our "nine month" renovations ran way over schedule, so we had to develop Plan B, C and D.

It may be too late for you to arrange collaborations and use of other spaces for original art, but you still have time to scan/photograph artifacts and art (or select already digitized artifacts.  Create a series of poster exhibitions that can go to any buildings with lobbies or public space, even bus stop shelters.

Work with staff and community to select images to display, such as people who work in the public buildings or neighbors of the public spaces.  If possible, identify the selectors and ask for a statement that can be used as an alternative or addition to the caption.  If you can work with the schools or after-school programs, you could even make the captions into mini-research and writing projects.

Our final renovation project was based on the planned re-opening exhibition. Use the posters as a preview -- what is this? who is this? To learn more, visit the Flint Institute of Arts!  We turned those digitized images into desktop wallpaper for our public access computers when we finally reopened.

    Good luck --

    Hi Marissa,
You might want to reach out the the Danforth Art Museum and School in Massachusetts, which is in the process of moving into a new buildng and has partnered with other organizations to use their exhibit spaces in the meantime.

Several years ago our galleries had to also close for renovations to the HVAC system-- here's information about the Sculpture Invitational and correlated programs, specifically a public art symposium, that happened as a result. It was a great way for the community and tourist economy to still 'experience' the museum. Many of the pieces still stand in the community and eventually a public art plan for the community was the result. Good luck!

Check out the Cincinnati Museum Center. A large part of their institution is closed for massive renovations and they are doing some innovative things around the community.

I have seen a museums successfully continue engage with their audiences through a temporary closure. Some of the ideas I picked up on were the obvious ways and means through social media (reno updates, object highlights, 'on this day' etc) to pop up exhibitions and small displays in unexpected locations (shopping malls, airports). One museum here also did highly specialised, exclusive group tour of the work area where it was possible (hard hats etc.).

    Hope that helps.

I would contact the people at the SD Agricultural Heritage Museum in Brookings, SD. They were closed for a month or two to work on removing asbestos in their walls this past Fall. They also worked on a new exhibit during the closure and had it opened by the time the museum was open to the public again. I think they may have had an off-site program during that time too. Here is their website to contact them at: www.agmuseum.com/ I just personally would recommend beefing up your marketing, both on social media and elsewhere. Advertise that you are closed for "something big" to encourage people to come see it once you open
