    Hi all,

I'm a 3D exhibit designer and looking for a graphic design and maybe typesetting course to take so I can learn how to do graphics for museum exhibits projects. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciate it!

    Many thanks!

    Good morning Jakub,

I see that you are already a designer, so you may be looking for a more advanced curriculum. However, as someone who found their way into the design world by accident, Lynda.com (now LinkedIn Learning) has been my secret weapon. They have a large collection of courses on a variety of topics, from the basics of graphics design and typography, to how to use particular software packages. The courses usually include materials for you to play with along with the instructor, and are broken into small (5-10 minute) sessions which make it easy to pop in and out of, or revisit as needed. I've recommended their courses to colleagues and staff for years.

Pro tip, I'm able to access Lynda through my local library.

    Best of luck,

    Hi Jakub,
I have been an exhibit graphic designer for over 20 years and have created the graphics for many award winning exhibits. Exhibit graphic design, like any design, is very specialized. There is a lot to learn to be successful. I would suggest starting with the Smithsonian's guidelines which can be found here .
This will give you best practices for font size and choosing readable fonts. Type colors and backgrounds need to have good contrast. The NPS also has good information. The hierarchy of information needs to be clear to guide people through the graphic. Most people will stop and look at the graphics and read a couple of things, like captions on interesting photos, but they'll move on quickly. So clear hierarchy is very important, and compelling photos that tell the story. InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop will be your primary software. Beyond that, start a pinterest board of exhibit graphics that you like and go from there.

I don't know of any classes you can take specifically for exhibit graphic design. But hopefully these tips will get you started. If you need a specialist for any of your projects I am available.

    Hello Jakub,

I've checked out your website and you've worked on some great projects! Are you wanting to shift your focus from 3D to graphics or broaden your toolkit? Like Chris mentioned, hierarchy in design is paramount to relay ideas and information efficiently and effectively to your audience. Lynda.com has some good basic typography and graphic courses to guide you in best practices. Depending on your exhibits, it might be helpful to also look for a course in info graphic design.

Since you already have experience with the process of exhibit design and have a creative eye, I'm sure you will be able to incorporate these new skills fairly easily-it's just a matter of which medium you prefer using to bring information and stories to life!
