    Hi there!

To free-admission museums, besides a manual counter, how are you keeping track of visitorship? Thanks in advance!

We currently rely solely on a guestbook, which we encourage visitors to sign (and most do, but not all).  The guestbook includes a line for them to list the number of persons in their party (so that they can sign an entire group in), as well as what city/state/country they are from.

We would like to come up with a better way to track visitors, though, so I'll surely be following along with this thread.

We keep a count, and ask for ZIP Codes, or if non-US, country of origin.

To improve the visitor counting accuracy CMA uses an automated counting system in the following areas of the Museum: -
The system we will be using for this is from TrafSys
This system is used in all MGM Casino's in Las Vegas along with the MET and Getty
Uses thermal imaging to count people (both entering and exiting)
Per manufacturer the system is 99% accurate
Multiple units can be linked together to capture counts for spaces with multiple entry points (such as Gallery 230)
One CAT6 wire provides power to the unit and link to the network
Counters run 24/7 which will pick up counts for after hour events

    Hi Bridgette,

We do primarily track attendance with the use of a manual clicker for the museum and different spaces like our children's area and third floor (when requested).  We record this attendance in Access; along with the daily gas price and weather, to see if there is an impact.  We also record the attendance for scheduled and walk-in groups.

For additional visitorship data, we collect ZIP codes for guests going to the planetarium or programs that require tickets.  We also provide a visitor survey that guests can choose to take, that collects additional information.

For our largest public event, we also track attendance by passing out stickers and counting them.  It helps keep things accurate, because so many people are coming and going between our building and the college next door.
