Hi - I am looking for travelling exhibits for a 2600 ft gallery.  We have approx 5 week exhibits, so curious what sources are out there that cater to this smaller venue.

This looks wonderful Mary.  I will definitely look into this.  It looks like we have 255 linear feet of wall. We will also have pedestals.

Hi David - my organization, Mid-America Arts Alliance, develops traveling exhibitions specifically for small and mid-size venues with galleries that are a similar size to yours. Our ExhibitsUSA program is more fine arts and NEH on the Road is a humanities based. Take a look at the links below to see if anything we have fits your needs.

    Hi David,

The LSU Musuem of Art in Baton Rouge, LA has several smaller traveling exhibitions you may be interested in. Attached is a link which lists all traveling exhibitions both available and retired; the smaller available exhibitions are both solo shows, one of Carrie Mae Weems and the other of Katrina Andry, but space is somewhat negotiable on others. Please feel free to contact me if any of these are of interest to the Larson Gallery, or if you would like more information.

Hi David, Arizona State Musuem has several small panel exhibits that fit even smaller spaces. Perhaps you could put a few up together with a temporary walls. Here are descriptions.

The Resiliency of Hopi Agriculture: 2,000 Years of Planting
Guest curated by Michael Kotutwa Johnson (Hopi), this photographic exhibit is about the importance and continuation of traditional Hopi dryland farming practices in the arid land environment of the Southwest. Hopi agricultural knowledge is based on time-tested agriculture techniques, community values, and spiritual beliefs. Hopi concepts of sustainability, stewardship, and reciprocity and their crop biodiversity are world heritage treasures. Co-curated by Lisa Falk, Head of Community Engagement, Arizona State Museum, the exhibit consists of 14 panels (on metal) 38 x 40, 1 video, 1 case of objects (9 colored corns, digging stick, gourd), brochure and postcard (artwork can be provided for customization).

Photo ID: Portraits by Native Youth
Native American high school students from Ha:san Preparatory and Leadership School in Tucson share their own photographic portraits, in response to the early 20th century photographs of American Indians by Edward S. Curtis. Concepts of identity, how we view "the other," stereotypes, and self-expression are explored. Curated by Lisa Falk, Head of Community Engagement, Arizona State Museum, consists of 14 panels (on sintra) 38 x 38, postcards (artwork can be provided for customization), and portrait planning worksheet.  Could be augmented by borrowers with Curtis photographs of tribes in their area. (Curtis photos are free to download on the Library of Congress website.) Traveled within Arizona. To view: https://statemuseum.arizona.edu/online-exhibit/photo-id-portraits-native-youth

It's Up 2 You! a comic book exhibit

An exhibit of the pages from a comic book written and illustrated by Ryan Huna Smith with Lisa Falk. The story encourages healthy living from a Native perspective. Samantha, a spunky teen skateboarder, challenges her buddies, Brandon and Tomás, to avoid the temptations of fast food and video games and to see the benefits of physical activity and healthy eating. But the boys aren't too keen to listen until Brandon, in a video game stupor, falls asleep and has a dream visitor. A peek into Brandon's dream reveals a new enemy and how they can combat him. Curated by co-author Lisa Falk, Head of Community Engagement, Arizona State Museum, consists of 10 panels (on foam core) 36 x 24 of the pages from the comic book, 2 blown-up cutouts from the comic, postcards (artwork can be provided for customization), comic strip drawing page. Other items that we used in a related exhibit could be reformatted to use in a new traveling exhibit if desired. Also available is an oversized skateboard painted by Native American aerosol artists Akers, Dwayno Insa, Rene "Strike 1" Garcia. In ASM collection is an original skateboard painted by the comic book co-author and illustrator Ryan Huna Smith. Traveled within Arizona and to Palm Springs, CA. Kauffman Museum, affiliated with Bethel College (a small liberal arts college in central Kansas) has produced a number of award winning small format traveling exhibits that continue to be available for travel- You can check these out at our traveling exhibits web page.

Of special interest may be Sorting out Race: Examining Racial Identity and Stereotypes in Thrift Store Donations. Sorting Out Race has been well received at museums across the US, including a number of university galleries, receiving the 2018 AASLH Leadership in History Award. There is a gap in our tour schedule when the exhibit closes at the Arizona State Museum, Tucson, at the end of February, and are offering it for the cost of shipping/installation in March-April 2020.

We are also in the process of preparing our recent exhibit Campaign for a New China: Looking Back on Posters from the Cultural Revolution, 1966-1976 to travel.

Another source I can recommend for interesting cutting edge traveling exhibits- Overland Traveling Exhibits by Flint Hills Design- Kauffman Museum has collaborated with FHD on a number of traveling exhibits, including several for NEH on the Road.

Please contact me if you would like to discuss any of these exhibits further.

    Hi David,

The Woodson Art Museum offers timely, topical, and beautiful touring exhibitions that might be a good fit for the Larson Gallery. To name just two: Birds in Art is our popular and perennial exhibition that explores biodiversity and draws attention to diminishing bird populations worldwide. Birds in Art offers contemporary, traditional, and eclectic interpretations, and is considered the standard-setter for art of the avian world. We like to say it provides the best bird watching on the planet. Ergo Sum: a Crow a Day is a moving and charming exploration of an artist's relationship to memory through creation of a daily piece of art that pays tribute to her mother's memory loss as she descended into dementia.

Learn about these and others at www.lywam.org; click on "Exhibitions," and then "Touring Exhibitions." Images, rental fees, and contact information are available at the site. The Woodson provides full insurance and excellent support materials.

    Hello David,
I'm sure you are looking for engaging exhibitions for your students, faculty, alumni, and family. We would love to introduce you to Norman Rockwell Museum's extensive traveling exhibition offerings, https://www.nrm.org/exhibitions/#Host-an-Exhibition many of which would work with your square footage. Most recently- we've had our Rockwell Four Freedoms exhibition on tour at both GWU, and at Hunter College in NYC. The complete (and very large) exhibition is fully booked through January; but there is a portion of the exhibit that features contemporary artists interpretations of the Four Freedoms - which may be of interest to you.  Both GW and Hunter did exceptional jobs engaging their students across multiple disciplines - in compelling programs.

Our Traveling Exhibitions Manager is Mary Melius:  mmelius@nrm.org

Let us know if we can be of further assistance.

When I saw this post I thought of two wonderful exhibitions that we currently have on view and promoted as potentially traveling. They are smaller than most people are looking for, but perhaps I should have been thinking of university galleries. Both are Hudson River Valley artists, so perhaps a bit far afield for Washington State museum. Then when I saw how many people were responding here, I wanted to mention them to the wider forum.

I have a prospectus and modest pricing prepared for Janelle Lynch: Another Way of Looking at Love, a contemporary photography exhibition featuring stunning, immersive images of Catskills foliage. https://www.hrm.org/exhibitions/janelle-lynch/ Lynch's themes of mindful appreciation and protection of nature are especially relevant at this moment. There are fourteen framed photographs ranging 26 x 22 to 44 x 36 inches and an accordion portfolio of five additional works. The installation of the show requires about 80 running feet and a case for the accordion portfolio. The response of our visitors and our professional colleagues to this small show has been overwhelmingly positive. There is also currently a great deal of international press coverage of Lynch, because she was shortlisted for the Prix Pictet; and the finalists's works are part of a world tour.

Its companion exhibition, James McElhinney: Discover the Hudson Anew, is also potentially available for travel. https://www.hrm.org/exhibitions/discover-the-hudson-anew/ This exhibition presents the painter's sketch books and prints related to his travels along the river and includes a video program, animating turning pages, to allow visitors to see additional sketchbook paintings. McElhinney also collaborated with me to select relevant nineteenth-century pieces from our collection by William Guy Wall, Jacques-Gérard Milbert, and Samuel Colman to display with his art. There are over 40 works in this exhibition, which we have hanging in 95 feet and could easily be spread out with less double hanging.

McElhinney and Lynch both demonstrate and inspire a deep appreciation for the Hudson Valley: his panoramas give us a broad overview of nature's splendor, while her photographs focus our attention on the meaningful connections in natural still lives. We would need to know soon if anyone is interested, before we return the artwork to the artists after the exhibitions close on February 16, 2020. Both artists would jump at the chance to see the shows travel.
