  • 1.  Tips for cleaning painted tile artwork

    All,

During a project to remove and replace a wall mounted painting workers discovered a very colorful work of art made of tile, most likely Saltillo tile.  This was discovered hidden behind the painting which was removed.  The painting which was removed had been hanging in our lobby for at least 40+ years.  The newly discovered work of art is made of 20 individual tiles (8"x8"), in five rows of four, and is even framed with narrow strips of black tile.  The scene depicted on the tile is that of a 16th century Spanish sailing ship.  What tips can anyone provide me with to clean and restore this work of art?  Some of the tiles have paint splatters on them and all the colors are dull.  Any advice is appreciated.

    Thank you.

Contact a qualified conservator or the job will certainly be botched.  If the museum is seriouis about object care, "cleaning" art is not to be approached as some simple janitorial assignment.

I encourage you to contact a Professional Associate or Fellow of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works, a national professional membership organization 501(c)6. The AIC has a referral service for locating conservator by state and area of specialization.
