We are exploring hosting a public program that will allow audience members to vote on the merits of the presentations. We'd like to offer a real time digital platform that allows us to collect the responses via smartphone and project the results instantaneously. Natch, we'd like it to be free. Anyone had any experience along these lines?

I've used Poll Everywhere, though the free version gives you only up to 25 responses.
    Poll Everywhere

Search term "text to poll" brings up lots of options - many optimized for classrooms.

Another option is to use SurveyMonkey via mobile site, but that requires audiences to go to the URL on their phone browser.

We use Slidedog, they have a free version to try, we purchased the Pro version.  You can call them and get a non profit rate.
