Removing foxing from artwork- musuem on a budget

    Hello All;
    I wonder if anyone can recommend a good resource for paper conservation. We have several serigraphs that have light foxing on them, and I would like to frame them, but I am certain that the mold should be killed before I do so.  I understand that artwork conservation is a complex science and a profession, and do not want to offend anyone by suggesting that there is a simple fix, but this is a very small museum at a Junior College without a conservation budget, and I am willing to try my hand if there is something less likely to create further damage.

    I appreciate your help!

    Hi,
    You can access a pdf from here which can help you out.
    I would still consult a paper conservator first as that specialist may recognise things you and I wouldn't.
    Happy New Year...

    Rachel,

    I would suggest that you check out Connecting to Collections Care, a program of the Foundation for Advancement in Conservation. You can sign up for the moderated discussion board, where you can post your question and get reliable answers from the conservators who are part of the discussion community.

    Good luck with your work.

    I can recommend Andrea Pitsch, a wonderful paper conservator who I have had do work for years and years.  The only thing is that she is sure not geographically convenient for your California location.  Here is her website: https://www.andreapitsch.com

    Rachel--

    I am not a conservator and can only speak as an occasional book collector who has dealt with foxing simply by exposing the affected pages to the sun. I suppose that you could also use a UV light.  Of course, the light can damage the paper, too, but a short (one hour) exposure will kill the mold and storage in a cool dry environment will keep it from recurring.

    Here is a link:

    Good luck!
