We first mail a notice reminding them they are about to expire and would they renew now. Once they are lapsed, we send a 2nd reminder, but it's a short, half-sheet of paper with something like "ooops - did you forget something?" in large print, at the top. Then, we have a couple sentences explaining that their membership has lapsed and the way to renew it. I've received notices like this myself.
