  • 1.  Early opening charge

    Posted 11-22-2016 12:30 PM

I'm looking to find out if anyone charges an extra fee for a pre-arranged group that wants to come in before the museum opens?  If so, what is your standard fee?

    Many thanks,

    Laura

    Hi Laura!

My institution allows for visitors to schedule a tour as early as 8:30 - for that, there's no extra fee, since staff arrives at 8am. However, if they want to have an event here in our rental venue or wish to tour the Museum after hours, we add $50 to the tour fee. Hope this helps!

At our museums, we actually offer groups the opportunity to book their tours before we open, as it allows us to spread them out – otherwise they all want to come at the same time. We do not, as far as I know, charge extra. Interpretive staff works an adjusted schedule on those days, with a couple of folks coming in and leaving early to accommodate.

My institution offers guided tours during the standard operating hours for an extra charge on top of admissions. We have recently begun offering "Early Access Tours" which take place before the museum is officially open, which cost $21 MORE than one would normally pay for general admission and a tour. The fact that it's a tour allows us to keep track of the visitors, so they can't get into trouble, and people seem to like it-- the Early Access Tours have been sold out since we started offering them.

Our normal admission fee is $10.00 per person and our group tour rate during normal hours. Is $8.00.  If a group wants to come in before or after regular hours they have to pay the full admission rate with a guaranteed minimum of 30 visitors.  We have had too many groups schedule large early tours and then only show up with 5 or 6 people that did not cover the cost of the staff that were brought in to cover the tours.   IF the group is larger than 30 they pay  $10.00 person for the quantity they bring.  Our tour vendor's have had no issued with this.

We allow groups to book before or after public operating hours if they meet a minimum dollar value for the hour or half hour requested. These bookings are considered to be non-exclusive visits (which means the general public can purchase tickets too).  The minimum is based on operating expenses that we double to make it worth the time and energy.  It is a popular option with our tour operator business, especially during the spring season.

Usually our staff arrive at 9am and the museum opens at 10am. We do allow groups to enter the museum at 9am or 9:30am without an additional fee. Our staff adjusts their schedules so some arrive earlier than usual to accommodate 9am opens. However about half those early groups don't arrive at the scheduled early time so we've discussed charging to keep it to a minimum.
