  • 1.  Quick tech question pertaining to jpeg metadata...

Does anyone have experience with embedding metadata into jpegs for purposes of digital preservation/databasing?  Specifically as pertains to EXIF, IPTC and XMP fields?  We are dredging up old specimen photographs at the Bishop Museum and wondering whether there is a standard in place for embedding either taxonomic information or metadata in general into jpegs.  Thoughts?

    Hi Nicholas,

Most of the metadata embedding we do is photography/videography information, so I won't be much help as far as Taxonomy Standards goes. However, we work with metadata quite a bit, and have found that the program Adobe Bridge is very helpful for embedding metadata. You can even create your own metadata templates within the program, so you can create specialized fields.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful!

Thank you Steven!  That is helpful.  Others have since mentioned Adobe Bridge, so we're looking into that now.  The only issue I can see is that if you're not using Adobe Bridge than the custom fields you've created may be "invisible".  But that's the nature of the beast!

    Hi all,

We use Adobe Lightroom to database and add metadata to images. There is also a very reasonable and easy-to-use program called PhotoMechanic. PhotoMechanic is used by professional photographers for managing and adding metadata quickly. Hope that helps!
