  • 1.  Interior paint - offsite collection storage

    Posted 09-20-2016 02:13 PM

    Hi Everyone –

We are looking to paint out the interior of our offsite facility. Does anyone know of a specific type/brand of paint that can be used that will not off-gas or off-gas over time?

    Thanks,
    Victoria

Hi Victoria, All the name brands, like B. Moore, Sherwin Williams, now carry no VOC (volatile organic compounds) water-based acrylic paints, including Behr at Home Depot. You should be fine as long as you don't require one with deep pigments, which I've been told don't always come in low/no VOC.

Every paint company now produces zero VOC (volatile organic compounds) paint. VOC is coating speak for petroleum based solvents. We use Sherwin Williams but again, everybody makes a solvent free acrylic water based paint.

When we painted ours, we used Sherwin Williams, as their staff was very helpful. I believe we used this product:

ProMar® 200 Zero VOC Interior Latex Paint

    there is also

    Harmony® Interior Acrylic Latex Paint

For more information on VOCs in their paint, they have this resource.

Try Sherwin Williams, they have low to zero VOC options for interiors and with the full range of colors. Their in house store specialists can direct you to the right kind of paint for your space needs.

    Hi Victoria,

At other places I've worked, I have had good luck with Benjamin Moore Natura:

There is a great summary on non-voc and low-voc paints on the Conservation Dist-List archives for those who really like to get into the chemistry nitty gritty. Don't let the title mislead you: Acrylic paint--Conservation DistList

It's dated but the science still applies, and the most important point is while products may be non or low-voc (definitely a good thing for people, and great advancement in technology) there still may be some chemicals that need time to off-gas before collections should be installed (certain collections i.e. paper,  are like sponges). 3-4 week for paints to fully cures seems to remain the agreed upon rule of thumb among conservators.

    Good luck, Michele
