Math Exhibits in Museums

  • 1.  Math Exhibits in Museums

    Posted 09-01-2016 06:05 PM

    Good afternoon,

I am a masters student in the University of Colorado Museum and Field Studies program. I am interested in math education within museums and am curious about the current state of museums and math. I have visited the Museum of Math in New York, but I'm also looking for examples of smaller math exhibits or programs in any kind of museum. Does your museum have a math exhibit or program? I'd be interested to know any examples. Let me know if you'd be willing to speak with me about a math program or exhibit that you developed. My email is: sarah.b.robertson@colorado.edu.

    Thanks,

    Hi Sally,

An interesting topic--I'm working on putting in a math exhibit at this very moment! We're not a math museum, but an American history museum with a focus on innovation. We recently acquired the exhibit Mathematica: A World of Numbers... and Beyond, which was designed by the Eames office in the 1960s. (Other iterations of the same exhibit are currently installed at the Museum of Science in Boston and the New York Hall of Science.) We're installing it as a period room since it's a historic exhibit, but we're also really looking forward to completing our STEAM representation with that final letter. We're working with local schools and educators to develop it as a place to see math in action, and will also be interpreting the science and design aspects of it. Mathematica will be on permanent display here, starting next year. I'd be happy to discuss it with you if you're interested! My email is emilyki@thehenryford.org.

    Hi Sally

Check out this traveling exhibition: http://mathalive.com  done by Evergreen Exhibitions. It's primarily for middle schoolers, and is designed to reveal the math within activities kids already love to do. It is traveling extensively throughout the US and around the world. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about it.

    Hi Sally,
We have had some math exhibits in our museum and we also regularly host Pi Day and such things as well. Most of our exhibits are for a family audience. A few years ago we hosted a traveling exhibit called "Go Figure!" which was math concepts in children's literature. It was created by the Science Museum of Minnesota. Science Museum of Minnesota
Good luck and please share your findings.

    Hi Sally,

Gateway Science Museum will be hosting the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry's Design Zone  in Spring 2017. It is a wonderfully curated exhibit that introduces mathematics through design and engineering, in fun and creative ways.  While I do not represent OMSI, I encourage you to check out this fantastic video they put together, highlighting the math in that exhibit at: https://vimeo.com/96842632.OMSI Design Zone

We did a one-off family program about math in nature (we're a natural history museum). We partnered with some local schools to have hands-on activities related to fractals and mathematical modeling of natural phenomenon, such as global warming, plus we had an art activity related to the Fibonacci sequence. The most exciting thing was that we built a record-breaking Sierpinski Triangle with K'Nex in our yard! It was a great day and a nice way to anchor something a bit more abstract in our natural history collection.

    Hi Sarah,

I am afraid that I don't have the specifics on the exhibits... I am speaking strictly from a visitor's perspective; but I found two excellent math exhibits at the Museum of Science (Boston) last year.  My daughters (ages 12 and 10 at the time spent almost two hours in these exhibits alone)   I apologize that I don't have more information on the particular exhibits but I am sure that if you contact the museum they would be able to point you in the right direction.

    best,

    Stephanie

    Hi Sally,

There have been several great exhibitions on math topics, including Design Zone, Math Moves, and Geometry Playground. There's a great lit review on InformalScience.org: http://www.informalscience.org/sites/default/files/InformalMathLitSummary_MinM_03-23-16_v3.pdf

    Hi Sally,

We have developed and toured a math exhibit based on the PBS Series Cyberchase called "Cyberchase: The Chase Is On!", developed a temporary exhibit called Everyone Counts, and have several other exhibits inside galleries that directly tie to mathematical concepts. We also have a dedicated Math Cart sponsored by Exxonmobil that features more than 130 changing math activities as well as regular special math events including an annual Pi Day celebration we've been doing for about 10 years. Hope it helps,

    Keith

To clarify, we are no longer touring Cyberchase: The Chase Is On! We do have a copy in our long-term exhibit galleries: Cyberchase: The Chase is on at Children''s Museum of Houston (scroll down to the bottom for a link to photos on Google+)

Cyberchase presents math in a fun, kid-friendly environment, allowing children to make use of their critical thinking skills.

    Thanks Catilin!

Sally, we (Luci Creative) was actually the contracted museum design agency brought on to collaborate with the Museum of Science and Industry to design, engineer and fabricate the interactive and immersive Numbers in Nature exhibit. We are working on a traveling version now as well that is planned to launch in 2017.
