  • 1.  School Group Programs on Nutrition

    Posted 04-21-2016 10:09 AM

    Hello!

We are developing a program for school groups (Preschool & K) centering on healthy habits to go along with a new exhibit featuring Doc McStuffins we have opening at the end of the summer. For one part of this program we want to focus on nutrition and healthy eating habits, but are having trouble thinking of new and exciting ideas for presenting this concept as opposed to just sorting food into healthy and unhealthy categories. Has anyone done any innovative programming or activities focused on nutrition that they would be willing to share?

    Thanks!

    Hello,

I am sorry, I do not have a good suggestion for you, but I urge you not to sort food into "good/healthy" and "bad/unhealthy" foods. All foods are healthy in moderation; all food is fuel. Maybe instead focus on what the nutrients in certain foods can help them do (e.g. milk has calcium that helps them develop strong bones so they can have structure to their bodies or beans have protein so they can build strong muscles that can help them swing on the monkey bars or run and play tag). In my personal opinion, kids should be able to enjoy a cookie without a judgement that they are doing something bad/eating something unhealthy. An ice-cream cone now and again is good for the soul.

The Children's Museum of Manhattan created an exhibit, accompanying curriculum and programming you might find useful:

The DuSable Museum in Chicago has an AMAZING program/museum theatre show they do for school kids about nutrition called "When Good Broccoli Goes Bad." It's awesome!

It would be immensely helpful if the FDA had released the new nutrition guidelines that were due in 2015 on time. They did finally release  them in November, so to be current (at least until 2020, when a new set is due for release) please refer to this website:
