Our museum is in the beginning stages of a complete exhibition renovation. We are seeking examples of the use of effective augmented reality platforms within exhibits for enhanced visitor experience. If anybody has recommendations from their own institutions, or someplace they have visited, we would appreciate hearing about them.

We have two really great design and AV/AR firms we are working with, just looking for successful applications of AR!

The Smithsonian Natural History has a great app called Skin and Bones that I have used: Skin and Bones - Mobile Augmented Reality App for The National Museum of Natural History's Hall of Bones

Few museum exhibits in the world can claim to have survived across three centuries or have been gazed upon by tens of millions of visitors. The Bone Hall is one of them, a grand comparative anatomy exhibit that opened the Smithsonian's first museum in 1881.

It works quite well. We are working on some AR projects right now, but they are not yet released into the wild.

    Hi Pam,

as Matthew mentioned (thank you!) we did in fact use AR technology in the Skin & Bones mobile app, in addition to all of the videos and activities; in fact just last week we released version 2.0 with which users can see the augmented content anywhere, and not just in front of the skeletons in the Bone Hall like with version 1.0.

    All

Yes--I just recommended the Skins and Bones app as well.  I visited the Smithsonian just last November and thought it was great!

We have also just released an augmented reality app which connects audiences with natural history specimens with a specialty in insects.  The project took a little over a year to produce and was developed in collaboration with iDigBio. You can see more about it here.

We also have a iDgBio working group called ARPEO--Augmented reality for Public Education and Outreach. We welcome

anyone who has an interest in this area--not just those with iDigBio affiliation.

    All-

A particularly intriguing platform I have come across that uses augmented reality is the Museum of London's Streetmuseum app. The app merges present day images with archival photos of London. The augmented reality app allows users to select a destination from a London map or use geo-tagging and Google Maps to pinpoint their location. Once selected, a historical image of their London location appears onscreen, which can be expanded and explored in detail, along with historical information about the subject. This allows for a unique way for the public to access archival materials. See article below.

I think there could be interested adaptions for other institutions.

Streetmuseum app can recognise a user's location and then overlay a historic image onto the camera view Each image on the free app ca n be expanded and explored, along with historical information about the subject Images include Blackfriars station in 1930, Victoria Station in 1950 and London's skyline seen
