Dear All: I read about a program at the NY MoMA that may be of interest
to you and your museum. Briefly, MoMA is running a modern art
appreciation group for people with Alzheimer's and their caregivers. It
may be something you want to consider.
The article is by Scott Selberg: Modern Art as Public Care:
Alzheimer's and the Aesthetics of Universal Parenthood. It is in the
recent Medical Anthropology Quarterly: International Journal for the
    Analysis of Health. V. 29, #4, Dec. 2015, pp.473-491.

MoMA led the way, but other museums are quickly following suit. And it's not necessarily about "art appreciation" as it is about human connection and meaning. http://www.startribune.com/as-america-ages-museums-are-adapting-to-audiences-with-memory-loss/364018571/

It's an international phenomenon, as well. Several museums in the UK--art, interdisciplinary, and others--are doing similar programs. They're mostly focused on social interaction, though some also take a reminiscence route.

These are really great posts! Thank you all for sharing. I'd also like to share AAM's 2013 report on how museums are addressing health issues. There are many museums around the country and the world taking on these important roles and topics.

My amazing education colleagues here at Carnegie Museum of Art also conduct a program for patrons with Alzheimer's and dementia. There are a special group of docents who lead the tours (which are booked in advance). Here's some information on the program and some press clips from our site : Carnegie Museum of Art

Research indicates the powerful role that engaging with art can play in the lives of people living with dementia. In the Moment gallery tours are informal conversations about art led by specially trained docents (tour guides) and provide an opportunity to be truly "in the moment."

And, Columbus Museum of Art also has a program, designed in partnership with the Alzheimer's Association for those with varying stages of Alzheimer and dementia, and their caregivers.  It is called Sparking Imaginations and has specially trained docents who lead the groups.
