  • 1.  Cold Storage for Photographs

Does anyone have experience using (or better yet: designing) cold storage for photographs and film?

Most of the references I have found are two or three decades old and detail workarounds using commercial refrigeration with double-sealed containers rather than designing an optimal temperature and humidity-controlled environment.

According to my research, cold storage is essential for preserving C-prints and film, but also benefits long-term preservation for the full range of photographic materials. Many facilities use 40 degrees and 40 RH as the best compromise environment for all photographic media, but some also use sub-zero storage for film and color prints.A 55 degree/ 40 RH acclimation room is sometimes used to bring prints to room temperature gradually, reduce warm air in the cooler, and to a storage/work environment for less sensitive prints. The workaround solution seems to be styrofoam coolers with sealed cartons.

I would love to hear from anyone who has worked with cold storage...

    • How have you managed temperature/humidity transitions?
    • Do you use an acclimation room and if so, for how long?
    • Where is the line where the risks of transition exceed the benefits of cold storage because the object comes out too often for exhibition or study?
    • What temperature/ humidity ranges did your institution decide to use and why?
    • Is inventory and collections management difficult in the cold environment and what are your solutions?
    • Is air circulation a problem with dense storage?
    • Can you recommend consultants/ contractors with specialized expertise?

I wrote a paper last year on preservation of film for a collections management course - I'm attaching it to my reply. Hope it helps!

I think you cannot beat getting information from an organization that has been using cold storage for photographs for years. It's one thing to know about the principles, and another to have lived with the implementation, use and maintenance. You may well hear on this forum from some of those folks, but I would recommend that you contact the National Baseball Hall of Fame. I have known many of their staff folks over the years, but I am not sure who is in charge of the photo collection at present. Perhaps email research@baseballhall.org and let it be known what your are seeking, or you could phone and ask for the photo collection. Best of luck!

If you are looking for designers contact Larry Bauer at Solomon+Bauer+Giambastiani Architects, who did the cold/cool storage for Harvard among others. He is a specialist in collection storage in general.

    Hi Susan -

I work for an architecture firm that specializes in museum and collections storage design. We just completed the renovation of the Museum of Modern Art's offsite Film Storage facility, which houses both nitrate and safety film, as well as a vast archive of film stills. We have also designed the Museum's photography, drawing, and print storage (see attachment).

I would be happy to put you in touch with the partner in charge of those projects to answer your questions. Please feel free to email me directly at acarlen@cooperrobertson.com if you think that would be helpful.
