  • 1.  Metadata + Controlled Vocabularies

    Posted 10-13-2015 02:52 PM

    Hi all,

I am working to establish our metadata standards for our digital asset management. We are using Piction for our DAM and are cataloging both collections images as well as non-collections photography (event images, archival images, etc.). While the Getty's Art & Architecture Thesaurus, Library of Congress, etc. have been helpful for our permanent collections, I am wondering if anyone has experience with or advice to give on tagging non-collections imagery with controlled vocabularies. Have you created your own vocabularies to use for this type of media or used a stock photography site like Corbis as a starting point?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi Nicole. We're undergoing an effort better organize our digital assets too - things like images of our building, etc. We're creating a detailed folder system w/intuitive names (e.g. Buiding > Exterior; Building > Interior, etc) and then using a # system and again intuitive nomenclature for the files -- ex: "001_Build_Ext-Front").

    Hi Nicole,

I have worked on this for a number of institutions using Piction. There are a number of ways to approach this depending on the structure on your implementation. The best way I have figured out to utilize Piction is to create different collections for different asset types (collection/events/exhibitions/publications) because you have the ability to create different metadata fields specific to each collection, with a handfull of fields that can span all collections for universal search.

Let me know if that helps or makes sense.

    Hi Heidi,

Thanks for your input! I remember listening to a webinar you did a while back about organizing and storing files that was very helpful :)

We've already established separate collections and metadata schemas for our non-collections and collections assets within Piction. However, what I'm looking for is more in regards to standard terminologies and controlled vocabularies for describing and keywording those non-collections assets. I've started creating a "keyword dictionary" for our non-collections in Excel, but was hoping there might be a resource available so I don't have to go reinventing the wheel.

    Thanks!

Got it. I am lot aware of one that exists because I think most museums non collections related assets are pretty specific to the institution. This might be a great question for a librarian... Let me check with my library and archives and see what they say. It is possible something like this might exist at the Library of Congress but I'm really not sure.

Might also be a great question to post to the DamMuse user group...

    Hi Nicole,

I know you mentioned Library of Congress, but have you tried their Thesaurus for Graphic Materials? I have found this useful for tagging non-collections imagery in the past.

    Hope this helps!
