  • 1.  Admission for College and HS Students

    Posted 09-29-2015 04:45 PM

I am curious how museums handle admission prices for local college students. In Charleston, SC, we have a number of colleges and universities, but have developed reciprocal relationships with only a few. Currently, we are closed for renovation, and are reconsidering our admission prices. Do many museums offer free admission to local college students, and if so, how do you track it? Does it matter whether they are visiting as an individual or a group? Also, do you get pushback from high schools/students requesting similar opportunities? Thanks for your feedback.

The Frist Center offers free admission for college students (with ID) on Thursday and Friday nights. We track the difference of paid vs. free college admission by having two ticket selections: College Student and Comp College. Visitors 18 and under are always free.  All student groups, including college, are free with advance notice through our group sales.

We are affiliated with a local college and those students get in free.  Other college students get in for the price we charge seniors.  High school students pay the 4-18 y/o price, unless they are part of a free school tour.

We have several colleges in the area and have a Student Admission Rate. I have been considering a Student Membership rate as well, but haven't found precedent for it to know if this is something that would be a good marketing tool to younger individuals.

We offer a student membership for college students of any age which is at a very reduced rate.  Additionally, children will all be free starting in 2016.

Our admission rates are Adult, Senior 65+, Youth 13-17, Children 5-12.  Free admission for Children 5 & under, Active Duty Military with ID and Museum Members.  We also have AAA and Smithsonian Membership discount.  During fire season, the US Forest Service opens an air attack base at McClellan Airfield, where we are co-located.  We offer a reduced rate for civilian aircrews and aircraft maintainers assigned to the air attack base.  Military personnel who are supporting the air attack on fires are considered active duty military.

We have an aeronautics campus of the Los Rios Community College District also located at McClellan Park/Airfield, in our immediate vicinity.  But we do hot have a college student rate.

We have a student group rate that includes college classes of any level. When students come on their own, they pay the regular admission (our adult rate begins at age 19). We have no free admission for college students in our Interpretive Center, unless the class is here volunteering for community service.

    Hi Lasley,

We offer discounted rates for students with an ID if they visit individually and we offer free admission to our museum exhibitions for groups of students visiting with their school with an advance reservation. To track their visits, we have built various price types in our system (we use Altru) with a $0 museum admission price type for school groups. This system has helped us differentiate between the types of guests we receive and better track attendance. To avoid confusion or push back, we make this available to any student with an ID--no matter where they visit from, and any school may take advantage of our group offering, as long as they adhere to the reservation policies.

    I hope this helps!

Thanks so much for everyone's feedback. I like the idea of free admission for all students when we are open late. We are planning to stay open until 8pm one night per week, and I think it could incentivize families to come after school as well as college students to come out with friends.

Do many of you have an evening that you offer later hours? Does your admission change during that period?

    Thanks!

    Lasley
