The Portal to the Public approach helps organizations connect public audiences with the research and innovation happening in their own community through dialogue with local experts. The approach centers on a flexible guiding framework that combines communication training for scientists, relationship-building between informal science education institutions and STEM professionals, and public events that bring together experts and the larger community. Dozens of science centers, natural history museums, zoos, aquariums, and other informal science education institutions that have adopted the framework collectively form the Portal to the Public Network (PoPNet), a community of practice dedicated to scientist-and-public engagement.
PoPNet's next training workshop is March 17-19, 2016 in Seattle, Washington. You can find requirements for joining and the application on the PoPNet website at http://popnet.pacificsciencecenter.org/.
