  • 1.  Teaching with care towards gender and sexuality diversity

    Posted 03-26-2015 01:36 PM

Does anyone have any resources for teaching with greater care and intention towards gender and sexual diversity for K-12 audiences?

An intern educator in our 10-month Museum Education Program is conducting a Teaching Research Project on the topic.

    Thanks in advance!

I would be interested in this as well.

We have an exhibit about El Paso's LGBTQ community that will have K-12 students possibly going through it. We would benefit from this discussion.

    Hi all,

I'm on the steering committee of AAM's LGBTQ Alliance, and I think I have at least one resource to share: the Gay-Lesbian Straight Education Network (GLSEN) has a whole section of its web site devoted to LGBT-Inclusive Curriciulum: http://www.glsen.org/educate/resources/curriculum

If you wanted to, you could also pose this question on the AAM LGBTQ Alliance Facebook page, which is very active. https://www.facebook.com/AAM.LGBTQ

Hopefully this will at least get your started. The Alliance is here as a resource, so if you have any further questions, don't hesitate to communicate with us.

    Thanks,
    JJ

    Hi, everyone,

In addition to the resources John & others have described, AAM's LGBTQ Alliance is in the process of developing a resource document about how museums can be welcoming spaces for LGBTQ communities.  We will be sharing and discussing draft portions of this document in Atlanta during Monday's Marketplace of Ideas.  If you'll be at the conference, please stop by and chat with us in order to learn, share, and access resources together!

When I was a PK-12 art teacher, I used the free resources provided by Teaching Tolerance almost daily. I second that recommendation.

The National Art Education Association has an LGBTI group that might also be helpful.

Here are a few links to some great articles that I give to my pre-service art ed students:

"Rethinking Schools" is an AMAZING resource, as well. They have a great online store stocked with resources, as well. I highly recommend this book, which was edited by a friend and former professor of mine (who's also part of the NAEA LGBTI group). There was a pdf version available for <g class="gr_ gr_2494 gr-alert gr_spell ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="2494" data-gr-id="2494">Indigogo</g> supporters - a print version should be out soon.

    Hi Alexa!

My go-to resource is the Teaching Tolerance website: http://www.tolerance.org/

In addition to lesson plans, they have a pretty thorough database of articles relating to theory and practice in the classroom.

Among other things, our school is using The Safe Space Kit, available digitally through the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network.

    Hi Everyone-

Sorry to be replying late but I do have some suggestions that you may want to check out online:

Gender Spectrum - go to resources then to education

    https://www.genderspectrum.org/

Vanderbilt University's The Center for Teaching has online resources on Diversity & Inclusive Teaching:

    http://cft.vanderbilt.edu/guides-sub-pages/diversity/

Welcoming Schools A Project of the Human Rights Campaign Foundation - the focus is on elementary school:

    http://www.welcomingschools.org/pages/key-elements-training-gender-inclusive-elementary-school

I know Teaching Tolerance was already mentioned but look for this article it might be useful as well:

    http://www.tolerance.org/gender-spectrum

    Good luck!
