    two additional references on museum origins not to be overlooked are:

    Tony Bennett. The Birth of the Museum. 1995. London, Routledge.

    Representing the Nation: A Reader. Boswell & Evans eds. 1999. London, Routledge.

    the latter includes some material already suggested, I think, including an essay by Rydell excerpted by his seminal book on the 1893 world's fair (which fair was itself foundational to both American ethnography and a couple of major museums, as we know).
