    hi John, I like Karsten Schubert's The Curator's Egg on the history of museums.  You might also take a look at Steven Conn's Do Museums Still Need Objects.  And on the origins of conservation, try the article by Andrew McClellan, Raphael's Folio Madonna at the Louvre in 1800, in Art Journal 54:2.  cheers, Maris

    I loved Riches, Rivals, and Radicals: 100 Years of Museums in America by Marjorie Schwarzer (a large-format richly illustrated publication from AAM) and Steven Conn's Museums and American Intellectual Life, 1876-1926. They both give you a sweeping overview of the history of museums in America, rooted in concrete examples. Then there are lots of great edited anthologies that offer more focused perspectives but I found these the most helpful in terms of general background.
