  • 1.  Looking for Low Cost or Free? Lighting Design Class

I need to improve my knowledge of lighting design and technology as I have a museum and a theme park project. I have mostly learned by doing but I need a certificate to show I have lighting knowledge.

I am wondering if anyone responded to this, and more broadly am wondering if there are ANY ways to learn about lighting design-paid workshops, online tutorial, consultants who do this kind of thing, youtube video, etc. We have VERY light sensitive materials so  I am especially interested in the relationship of light levels/preservation based footcandle choices combined with the tricks to not make the place look like a dark cave. Surely other people have needs to learn these skills?

    Thanks for any thoughts.

I have attended a class put on by Grainger/GE. Very informative. You may want to contact your Grainger location in your city to see if they or GE is putting on any of these classes.

    Hi Margaret,

Lighting Design is a continually ongoing learning process particularly in the field of conservation exhibit lighting. I have attached a previous response to Forum on lighting in museum work created by Steven Rosen, FIALD, President of Available Light, as he has spent more than 35 years honing his lighting knowledge and passion for exhibition lighting. While the document is both consultative and educational the field is a constantly evolving technology married to many years of on the job training. We do have a Designer in residence in Raleigh NC who could be of service to you. Please let me know if you like him to reach out to you.

Hi Richard - I have one suggestion - hire a lighting designer if you'd like to have a successful outcome. There's a universe of lighting knowledge needed for this project.

    Hello Richard,

Scott Rosenfeld from the Smithsonian posted a YouTube video on museum lighting about three years ago. Light technology has changed since then, especially LED but as a basic guide it has practical advice. As for earning a certificate check out acuity academy. It's brand based but you can earn CEU credits. Most lighting companies like Phillips, Sylvania etc have courses you can access online. Also, check out iesla.org/education.html

    I hope this helps.
