  • 1.  Looking for co-presenters: Exhibition Design & Audience Engagement

    Posted 08-31-2016 09:48 AM

We are looking for co-presenters to explore how exhibition design impacts audience engagement from drawing visitors to the museum, to driving the in-gallery experience to developing meaningful connections in the post-visit sphere. From education to marketing to membership, how can innovative exhibition design fulfill 360 degrees of a museum's mission?

As a part of this conversation, we'd like to invite participants to discuss how they're integrating aspects of social media engagement and mobile experience to invite audiences to more directly, actively participate with the exhibition and with the museum? How are different museums expanding the experience beyond the museum walls?

This multi-platform world challenges traditional notions of branding, promotion and experience. It requires museums to embrace flexibility, transparency, and new ideas around what constitutes a meaningful connection to their cultural offerings. How are designers working with museums to build-in flexibility, modularity and meaning do this?

If you or a colleague would like to join us in this conversation, even if it's not to showcase success stories but to share questions, challenges, concerns, first steps, early initiatives, confrontations . . . we think all parts of this conversation are valuable. We think the opportunities are great but the challenges are, as well. Will you join our panel to add your voice to the discussion?

    Jennifer

id be interested in participating in this with you. I could talk about strategies that we use onsite in developing the exhibit - our process for community engagement throughout the development process and what we do within an exhibit to engage the audience and enrich the exhibit experience - through interactives and technology.

We tackle tough issues in the museum - educational equity, lynching, demographic change, war and have been successful in engaging community and audiences both onsite and offsite.

I would be interested in joining the panel. I have done slightly different work with our visitor's social media use. I analyzed Instagram and Twitter postings to inform our exhibition development process. Understanding the natural behavior of our visitors has helped us design elements within a permanent exhibition.

I would be interested in discussing the topic.  We've recently finished the design phase for galleries that speak to Marine Corps history from 1976 through present.  It was a tough topic, and getting collaborators and stake holders engaged early was critical.

    Jennifer,

Our library is working with a group of student entrepreneurs to provide exhibition content for a discovery platform accessed through the 'tap' of a mobile smart device.  The targets include some information about what is in the cases and, when available, a video file of the student curator talking about the curatorial thought behind the case. We're hoping to support the students and also bring in new audiences via social media.  I have no idea how it will turn out--but we hope to get statistics about the number of taps, time of day,and demographics from the program.  If this sounds useful to your panel, let me know.

    Best,

    Celia
