  • 1.  Looking for Co-presenters for AAM 2017: Tech disruption and the art of thinking fast!

    Posted 08-19-2016 05:03 PM

Snapchat? Pokemon Go? Facebook Live? Who knows what will be around in May 2017!!!

I'm looking for panelists for a lively conversation about how your museum has handled disruptive technologies, whether it's creating policy, allowing for new levels of interaction or discovering new avenues to innovate.

I'm open to topic suggestions and paths, but think this could be a really interesting discussion!

This has been a popular topic lately! I spoke about it in a panel at Texas Association of Museums on this topic recently, and will be speaking about it on panels in Austin and for the Mountain Plains Museums Association Annual Meeting in October.

In many aspects, it can be about being able to start understanding a demographic that is accessing your physical sites, properties, and content 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, many times without museum awareness of their presence. These technologies can also in some ways offer opportunities to improve/control to an extent your branding - but only if your organization participates and is involved.

    Hi Layla,

This sounds interesting, and it is something we and other museums encounter -- should we join Snapchat? should we do Facebook Live? Does they fit with our written social media strategy? How do they fit with the museum's mission overall? Do we have the content/expertise do it? Do we have the right tech tools to carry things out?  What are other museum's doing? How do we move from asking questions to actually doing something?

So I think I'd have something to add -- let me know if you still need co-presenters.

    Best,m

    Michael

I think there are so many low cost solutions that small museums can use to adjust to these growing trends. I have had a blast, and it has encouraged some of our membership to try it out too...
