Seeking African and Oceanic art scholars for IMLS funded research

    Hello,

I applying for an IMLS Museums for America grant to support scholarly research of our collection of African and Oceanic Art. I am seeking two scholars with expertise in either African or Oceanic art to review our shell catalogue records, examine objects, and address any misidentifications or misattributions of the objects. This research project would lay the groundwork for refining our collection, including deaccessioning objects. Our collection is approximately 500 objects with roughly 300 from Africa and 200 from Oceania. There is information about 2 dozen of African objects on our website:  http://cdm15701.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/landingpage/collection/p15701coll1

Please contact me if you are interested in this project. I can provide a detailed description of the collection and an excel inventory sheet with thumbnail images and catalogues entries. I am on a fixed timeline since the IMLS application is due December 1st.

Thanks in advance for your time and consideration.

    Best regards,

    Kristen

    Hi Kristen,

You may want to contact John Buxton, an appraiser out of Texas (who's made many appearances on the Roadshow). He is an expert in these culture groups and helped us a few times over the years.
