  • 1.  Summative evaluation of recent citizen science projects in museums

    Posted 08-04-2016 01:33 PM

    Hello,

I'm wondering if anyone can cite examples from museums that have conducted summative evaluation of citizen science projects in the last few years. I'm thinking about the possibility of an AAM session that looks at case studies of museums that have sought to quantify the learning impacts of citizen science projects on participants. Any leads would be helpful. Thanks.

    Hello!

I think this sounds great! I am not sure if they've done a summative evaluation, but the Adler Planetarium in Chicago, IL does quite a few Citizen Science programs year round. I would suggest reaching out to them!

    Hi,

Do you know Zooniverse in the UK? They've architected many successful citizen science projects on their Zooniverse platform, and many of these projects have won awards. I'd be surprised if they haven't done evaluations. You can look into all this here:Zooniverse

    Hi Erica:

Have you tapped into informalscience.org? This is a great resource not only to learn more about research and evaluation, but to find reports on projects with similarities to yours to see how others are dong it.  Under the evaluation tab, click "Browse."  You can narrow with keywords, discipline, audience, etc.  I have found it really useful! Good luck!

Neither of these are technically in museums, but the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology has been working on a project to develop a series of instruments that can be used to evaluate the impact of citizen science programs. You can find out about their work here: http://www.birds.cornell.edu/citscitoolkit/evaluation/instruments

Also, the research team at the Lawrence Hall of Science has been doing evaluation of National Geographic's citizen science projects. I would get in touch with Ardice Hartry at hartry@berkeley.edu
