  • 1.  Fed Ex White Glove Service

    Posted 07-12-2016 02:49 PM

    Hello!

Anyone have experience with Fed Ex's White Glove service to ship museum artifacts? I would like to hear pros and cons of your experience. Or can anyone recommend an alternative for shipping a smallish wooden crate? (21"H x 27.5"W x 18.25"D)

    Thanks!

We have used Fed Ex Custom Critical quite a few times.  Pros: they are an exclusive use service, they load your crate and go directly to the destination.  The company has tracking on the trucks so if they stop for longer than half an hour, dispatch contacts them.  They have climate control and are very conscientious about keeping it on point. Cons: they are exclusive so you pay for the whole truck even if you are shipping one small crate. The drivers are not art handlers and, depending on the drivers, will not help load and unload a shipment.

If you don't require exclusive use, try US Art, Atelier 4, Artex, Artemis.  All have shuttles.

    Hi Valerie,

I recently worked with FedEx White Glove when artifacts were shipped out of our museum for an exhibit we had been hosting. This was my first time working with them and I was not impressed and would not recommend them. The trucks had not equipment for moving the artifact crates on their truck. The floor of the truck was not flat, it was a raised channeled floor which made it impossible to roll dollies into the truck. I have worked with Masterpiece International quite a few times and they are a well equipped and knowledgeable, this is their website: Masterpiece International .  We have also used Atelier quite a few times in the past, they are a local Philadelphia company but they do transport , their website: Latest

    Valerie and all,

Keep in mind that Masterpiece International does not have their own fleet of trucks.  They will coordinate shipping for you, but they will subcontract with a third party for truck transport, most likely using one of the companies already discussed (FedEx Custom Critical, Atelier 4, U.S. Art, Artex, Artemis, etc.).

I second Ann's suggestion to check in with the companies that run shuttles if you have the time.  The shuttle services we use run about every two weeks.
