Depending on the attendance of your museum (traffic to the store) I would suggest either a formal system like RetailPro which is what we use here.  As important as the program is the provider, make sure you buy from a company that offers good support.  We work with Big Hairy Dog out of Sacramento.  They are fantastic and offer training and technical support.
