Hello everyone!  I am a Museology masters candidate at the University of Washington, and I'm assisting with a research project on Video Games in Museums led by Travis Windleharth, a PhD candidate at the UW's Information School.  We are conducting a baseline study to find out how many museums across the US have video games, and how they are being used.  For our purposes, "video games" include any kind of game-like interactive technology, including things like touchscreen quizzes or puzzles, flight simulators, and games included on museum apps or websites.

We want to hear from you!  If your institution uses or collects any kind of video game in any way, in any part of your museum--or even if your institution doesn't have any games at all--we would appreciate 5 to 10 minutes of your time to respond to the questionnaire linked below.  You will have the option at the end to provide an email contact if you are willing to talk to us further.  This survey has been approved by the University of Washington and your response will be confidential.

Since my networking reach is limited as a student, I encourage anyone willing to pass this along to their colleagues or professional networks.  If you have any suggestions for other venues that would work well to distribute the survey I would be happy to hear them and to respond to any questions anyone might have.  Thank you!

Hey! FYI, the Frost Museum of art in Miami florida just had an exhibit on the art of video games. Please contact their curator Klaudio Rodriguez to see if there is overlap

You might be interested in the games at the Perot Museum of Nature and Science in Dallas, Texas. They have several multi-station games, including one that allows visitors to build a bird by selecting features such as wingspan and feather type.

The Frazier History Museum (http://fraziermuseum.org/) in Louisville, Kentucky, has (had) a game in the gallery allowing the visitor to plan several elements of a new colonial town. As a gamer, it was nice to see a cause-and-effect in a museum game (rather than a Skinner box).

I would be interested in your research and the resources you uncover. We are still relatively early in the design phase of our exhibits. I know we want some game elements, but I want them done well.

    Good luck with your research!

Will this survey and dissertation result in any data on the efficacy of using video games in exhibits?

Thank you everyone for the great tips and support!  To answer your question, Dan, no there will not be any data on how effective games are in exhibits.  (That might be a great thesis topic for me next year, though!)  The scope of this study is a very broad, general overview of who has games and how they're being used, which will hopefully inform future studies for us and other researchers.

Hi, I'm the curator of Education at the Frost at FIU in miami. Klaudio our curator installed the travelling Smithson exhibit The Art of Video Games, in a amazing way. We explored STEAM learning, and connected to curriculum in several ways.

As part of our exhibits, klaudio uses I pads etc, call him at 3053482890, he can share his experience.

I encourage you to get in touch with the University of Wisconsin's Games, Learning and Society program.  I believe they have developed games for the Minnesota Historical Society and other museums in the past, as well as various K-12 applications. (Games+Learning+Society Center

Hi! I've done a lot of work in my post MA studies on museums with video games as objects rather than just engagement tools. If that fits into the scope of what you are researching and feel it might be beneficial to your project to connect, drop me your email address. :) My LinkedIn profile URL is in my signature below as well. Regardless, good luck with your study! Interested in the results!
