  • 1.  How much do donors really pay for naming rights?

Just curious if anyone would share what their donors actually paid for naming theatres, seats, exhibits, galleries, lobby, outside or inside benches etc.  Trying to put together a case for support in community that is rich with museums and donors but not a lot of shared information.  Thank you.

Kind of depends.  Some of your examples (benches, seat, etc.) are typically paid 100% by donor.  A rule of thumb for galleries, large spaces, etc. would be at least 50% of total costs, with balance made up by smaller donations.

We don't have an active 'naming' program at the moment.  Our gift policy has been reviewed and we are at the front end of a capital campaign so a thoughtful approach to the implications of that is being taken.

However, in the past we had an offer to sponsor oak benches.   The price was $ 5,000.  The quality of the bench put the base cost at between $1,500 and $2,000.   The balance was an allowance for the labor of moving and storing benches during the winters,   refinishing them to keep them in good condition, and a small amount for an acknowledgement plaque on the back of the seat.

    Hope that helps.

    Rebecca,

First off, I love the Spy Museum!  What a cool place.

I hope you get lots of responses on this question because we wrestle with it as well.  As David said, the contribution level for a big naming right depends on the space, but it also depends on the length of time the name will be in place.  If it's a "forever" kind of name in a prominent position, especially something like the main lobby, consider a multiple of cost.
