  • 1.  separating large (24 x 30) photo prints

I have almost a hundred very large photographic prints.  I also have hundreds of plastic drafting sheets - specifically "3 mil double matte standard transparency drafting film".   My question is can these drafting films be used to separate the prints in flat files?  These drafting sheets are semi-transparent and seem to be very stable and clean.

    Hi Kirk,

You might want to research that material further. Try starting with the Northeast Document Conservation Center’s website. It is a great resource. Their section on Storage Enclosures for Photographic Materials would be most helpful for you.

Kirk, you have a great resource close at hand, at the Minnesota History Center. There is a great research library there, and I am reasonably certain that someone on staff would be able to advise you about the best storage strategy for your materials. Since the library is local to you, it might help if you brought in a sample of your photos and potential separation sheets, though that might not be necessary.

    Best of luck,

    Bruce
