Hi Amber,
I'll reply here as I am a contractor hired by the Albuquerque Museum Foundation to publish their member magazine. The Museum Foundation staff decided to split up the marketing functions and outsource those that were outside the area of expertise for the staff. The position was posted on the local non-profit jobs website, and though I normally do not respond to those (most of our business comes through networking), it seemed like a good fit for us and for them.
My experience, at least on the marketing/foundation/member publication side of things, is that if you can find a great contractor who is a partner with the Museum, it can be a great (and affordable) way to improve the quality of certain functions. After all, museum staff should be able to focus on what they do best.

Subject: In House Positions VS Contract?
Hi all...Happy Monday!
I'm curious as to what positions your museums hire in house vs getting contractual? Over the past few years, what's been the trend in terms of leaning towards one or the other? I pretty much know how recruiting for the former happens, but what about the latter? Your responses are greatly appreciated!
